VIRACHAY NATIONAL PARK

A sprawling 1,330-square-mile (3,445-km2) forest bordering on Laos and Vietnam in northeast Cambodia. During the Vietnam (or “American”) war it was a link in the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Like all forest areas in Cambodia, it is heavily hunted for demands of the wildlife trade, but still home to tigers, leopards, Asiatic wild dogs, sun bears, buff-cheeked gibbons, and douc langurs. Facilities are minimal, but friendly, welcoming rangers at park centers in Voen Sai and Siem Pang will try to help visitors see at least park fringes.
